Underestimating disruptive technologies
This is a perfect example of how incumbents continually underestimate disruptive technologies. Solar will continue to become cheaper, to where fossil fuels make very little sense except as components for plastics, paint, fertilizer, etc. Burning it is a complete waste. The long term economics are why solar and electric cars will prevail over fossil cars, unfortunately the incumbent auto makers have too many assets devoted towards old fossil based transportation that will be painful to divest from. The smart ones will divest ASAP. The adoption of battery electric vehicles in the near future is massively underestimated just like the adoption of solar was.
